About the Event:
Arkansas Re-Entry Simulation is an educational program run by University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture (UADA). The goal of this program is to support former inmates in their transition to life after prison. In 2023, the program developed a gamified simulation event where former inmates could practice essential money management skills through role playing scenarios such as applying for jobs, securing loans, budgeting, and saving using play money.
UADA Mission Statement: Our mission is to strengthen agriculture, communities, and families by connecting trusted research to the adoption of best practices.
The Challenge:
The challenge involved bringing together many different elements requested by the client: symbolism of a house, jail, the Arkansas state outline, and the concepts of self-improvement and gamification. Also, the logo needed to be paired with the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture logo to comply with university regulations.
The Result:
Including all the client's requested elements such as the house and jail, while maintaining a clear and minimalist look was key to making sure the logo design communicated effectively. Modern logos tend to have a minimalist style, meaning designs tend to imply more with fewer visuals. To tackle the large amount of symbols, I chose abstraction to convey ideas indirectly rather than through literal representations. This allowed me to create more subtle meanings with less symbols. For example, instead of using jail bars, I used a striped pattern on the outline of Arkansas to subtly suggest prison. I combined the symbol of the house roof with arrows to represent home, leveling up, and video games. And I selected a funky, techno-inspired font to further suggest gamification and vibrant green color to symbolize personal growth and money.
